Laundry Room Organization: Missing Socks

Never have missing socks after laundry again! This tutorial will keep your socks from going missing and laundry room organized! This is my story of the missing socks. Sure enough, after a load of laundry there’s always at least one random sock without it’s partner.

every. single. time.

I’m convinced the drain eats them up or they mysterious get in between the walls. I put the solo socks back in my dresser drawer assuring myself that once I find the matching sock I’ll remember to pair them. Enter a sock drawer of individual unpaired socks.

The solution: only paired socksget put back into the bedroom dresser drawers. Until the sock has it’s pair, it gets stored in the laundry room in these cute labeled baskets.

SUPPLIES

  • Two decorative baskets **
  • Ribbon
  • Labels (I used these)
  • Hole punch

** I made a second basket for socks that were past their prime and ones that truly lost their partner AKA “cleaning rags”.

INSTRUCTIONS

Either hand-write or type out your labels, trimming according to label holder size. I typed mine and just printed on plain printer paper. Slip the labels in to the clear label holders and make a hole punch on each side.

Next loop the ribbon through the label holes ensuring the ribbon runs in the back of the label. Pull the ribbon around the entire basket, tying in a knot tightly on the back of the basket.

Tada! You’ve got one basket for single socks and one for ‘socks turned rags’! Each time I do the laundry and find a single sock, I simply check my sock basket to either find it’s match or place the single sock in it.

Keep these out on top of your laundry machine or tuck them away in a nearby cabinet.

May your socks never be single again!

I was just telling my boys this week that we need to do something about our unpaired socks. This looks very neat and organized. Mine are just residing on top of the washing machine in a heap.

    What a great idea, Lindsay!

Those separated pairs of socks drive me mad! I’m going to try this!

    Came over on Wise Woman.
Hope you have a blessed day~

This is a nice idea. I always try to find a designated spot for the single socks but always seem to fail miserably. I’ll have to try harder.

Love this idea! I put all our unmatched ones aside in a pile, same theory but nowhere near as attractive to look at as your sweet baskets. I’m very careful with my socks, but my husband not so much – his pile of unmatched is far bigger than mine! #healthylivinglinkparty

I do something similar but not that cute. Mine are in a big pitcher sitting on my dryer. Oh where are those missing socks I never find?

This is a very sexy solution! My partner has completely given up on me and just buys socks that look exactly the same.

Wait until the puppy comes! This missing socks bin is going to get incrementally more full! 🙂

Great idea. I was just talking to myself about these while doing the laundry and hanging the washing. I seriously don’t know where these disappear to. It’s most the baby’s socks because they are so small.

This is such a simple but brilliant idea! We have way too many solo socks in our house, too!

That’s funny but so true. Great idea to solve the problem.

I do the same, but I up it a bit. If a kid talks back, they match socks. So I don’t even have to look for matches. I just throw lonely socks into the basket and wait for the inevitable.

Thanks for the tip! This is a big problem in this house! haha
I also know there are supposed to be these “clips” that you can put on the socks before washing to keep them together, have you heard of those?

I might have just try this as just this past weekend trying to organize 3 kids socks after they come out of the dryer took the whole afternoon. There has to be a better way. Definitely trying something like this out. I’m visiting today from The Creative Corner Linky party but now I’m following/stalking you everywhere.

Absolutely love this idea. I would love to also know where do all those single socks go that are unmatched. It’s like the dryer eats them up forever. hahaha Great solution. Thank you for linking up to Share With Me and I hope to see you again tomorrow for another great round. #sharewithme

Great idea! Better than the gift bag in the bottom of my closet that houses all the single socks.

Nice to know that we are not alone in the mystery sock game. I do keep all my poor single socks together hoping that one day the mate will show up (not likely). Eventually, when the socks have been around for a long, long time and all hope has been lost, I use the socks for something else. It is always then, that a like sock shows up single and I could have matched it up with the other single. . . but I just turned it into some silly craft item. Story. Of. My. Life!

Cute idea! I’ve eliminated the need for the sock basket itself, though, by pinning my socks together. For kids you could put a large button on one and a button hole on the other, or add snaps at the top to snap them together. It makes folding, putting away, and grabbing a pair from the drawer SO much easier, too!
