I've always been intimidated by grilling until now! Step by step instructions to teach you to grill burgers! Right in time for your next bbq!

Anyone else? Not only did I not know any burger recipes, I had NO idea how to use the grill. So over the weekend I threw a little outdoor roof deck party & I convinced Joe to teach me and 4 of my girl friends everything he knows about grilling. We even got a little fancy making turkey burgers and turkey brats from Honeysuckle. Their turkeys are raised without growth-promoting antibiotics and also won’t hurt your wallet! Step 1 Turn on the grill 🙂 . Yes it sounds simple, but if Joe wouldn’t have shown me I would have had NO idea how. We have a gas grill and to turn it on, I turn the knob from perpendicular to parallel to the pipes.

Once the gas is turned on, then the actual grill needs to be turned on. Admittedly Joe had to show me how to do this as well! The large arrow points to the button that turns on the grill and smaller arrows point to each of the burners that I turned on high (roughly 450 degrees). If you’re not sure if the temp is correct, you could get it to the point that you can hold your hand an inch over the grate for only one second (but I’d rather just guess 🙂 ).

Step 2 Combine ingredients below (minus the buns, obviously). Meshing the ground turkey too much isn’t good. It can make the turkey tough and dense so simply mix the ingredients just until they’re evenly distributed.

Ingredients (makes 3 turkey burgers roughly 1/3 lb each)

  • Honeysuckle White Ground Turkey, 1 lb
  • Worcestershire sauce, 3 teaspoons
  • Red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon
  • Lemon Pepper, 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh thyme chopped up, roughly 3 teaspoons
  • Salt, to taste
  • Buns
  • Bacon (optional, see step 4)

Step 3 Separate the turkey in to 3 pieces and pat down to a 1/2 inch thick patty. This will help for even cooking and prevent dry sides.

Step 4 (optional) After we prepped the turkey burgers, we (arr… Joe) made some bacon to add on top of the burger. Simply put the bacon on a rack placed on baking sheet lined with foil. Bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes.

Step 5 Clean off the grill. Joe always like to clean the grill off before he starts cooking. Simply use a grill scraper over the grates a couple times. The heat helps burn off any residue.

Step 6 Place the burgers on the grill for 7 minutes per side. If you use a meat thermometer, remember that 165 degrees F is the magic number you want the meat to get to. If you’re adding cheese to your burger, add it on 2 minutes before you’re ready to take them off the grill.

Tip: Do NOT push down on your burgers with your spatula! You’ll lose all the juices!

You’ll notice my friends & I weren’t nearly as interested in watching Joe clean the grill as we were watching him cook the burgers 🙂 . You can see us sitting on the couch behind him drinking wine during the ‘cleaning step’.

Step 7 Set your cooked turkey burgers aside for five minutes before serving just to let juices redistribute. We were anxiously adding toppings on to ours! Grilled onions, tomatoes, bacon and avocado were great toppings.

One of these days I need to get out there and try out our grill. We have a charcoal grill (which you would think would be pretty straight forward, but I am definitely clueless), I would love to upgrade it to a gas one.
PS Your turkey burgers sound delicious! Honeysuckle is one of my favorite brands, but it’s not easy to find around here (*hint hint* Honeysuckle…. rural NC is looking for you.).

I was surprised to see how many different products Honeysuckle White makes. The ground turkey is very good, and if you put sauce on it for sloppy joes, the kids don’t even know it isn’t beef.

That first graphic is so true…lol. Since my hubby works long hours, I had to learn to grill and now I’m pretty good at it. I’ve been teaching my boys to grill now, but I think I need to teach my girls too.

I ALWAYS leave the grilling to my man. Maybe next time I’ll do it myself! 😉

LoL at your meme graphic! So true! Why can’t turning on the grill be as simple as turning on the stove? I’m scared of turning on the gas grill too but it doesn’t seem too complicated.
I have Honeysuckle ground turkey in my freezer right now, I need to make some burgers to grill!

Super fun party idea! I should’ve crashed your party as I too have no idea how to use the grill. Thanks for linking up with Funtastic Friday.
