We all know that person. That person who’s house is completely clean, every item in the house has a home, every dish is washed, every pillow is fluffed. We tell ourselves that her home is ONLY that clean because she spent all day cleaning for her  guests. Then we secretly hope there’s at least room in her home that is way too messy to show off.

We can either hate the girl that has the perfectly clean home OR we can be that girl.

Now my home isn’t perfectly clean, often times far from it. (I always have THAT room where the door is always shut because it’s such a mess inside). Yet, overtime I’ve learned tips & tricks to give the biggest bang for my buck as far as cleaning goes. Because let’s be real, who has time (or interest) to spend all day cleaning?

For the busy girl that doesn’t want to spend every last minute cleaning her home, here are the top 10 secrets of busy girls who always have a clean home:

Start and finish laundry in the SAME day. Nothing screams ‘there’s still more cleaning to do’ than laundry sitting out overflowing waiting to be cleaned or cleaned laundry waiting to be folded up and put away. Sometimes I don’t hear my laundry machine go off when a load is done, so I often set my phone alarm to remind me (since I ALWAYS have my phone on me!).

There’s SO many laundry systems out there that you can follow. Regardless of your system, don’t leave laundry unfinished!

2 Do your dishes. Honestly, your kitchen can be spotless with not a crumb in site, but if there’s dirty dishes in the sink your kitchen automatically looks messy. Yes, it’s easy to leave the dishes in the sink thinking you’ll clean them the next day. Deep down you know it’s NEVER easier to clean the dishes the next day. Just clean them NOW!

The new Palmolive® Fusion Clean™ dish liquid is made for tough cleaning challenges. It’s ultra concentrated and can even dissolve 24 hour stuck on food for those days that you just don’t get to the dishes in time! I’m loving this Fusion Clean™ Baking Soda & Lime version … combining baking soda & scents of lime for a Modern Twist on Cleaning, It’s also available in Baking Soda & Grapefruit. Swing on over to your local Kroger store to pick yours up. Keep an eye out for a $0.25 any Palmolive® product coupon coming soon!

3 Keep cleaning supplies handy. It’s hard enough to keep a house clean, don’t make it harder. I keep all purpose cleaner & paper towel under each bathroom sink. Now there’s NO excuse to not wipe down the counter when it looks dirty. Palmolive dish detergent is always right at my sink.

If you have to haul your cleaning supplies throughout the house, you’re much less likely to use them!

4 Speaking of counters .. do the important things each day. Everyone has those things that you need to do each day to make your home look cleaner. Whether it’s putting ‘front door area’ clutter away or wiping off the counters. Make sure to do THAT thing. You know it make a huge amount of difference.

5 If it’s not working, CHANGE IT. Everyone has a different system that works for them. Yes, it’s great to search Pinterest for cleaning inspiration, but no one knows your schedule and lifestyle better than you. What one person says they do every evening, for example, may not work for your schedule. Don’t force a game plan that isn’t working. There’s no shame in changing what doesn’t work!

Invite someone to your home. We all have those times where our home is just a mess for too long. We ignore it or pretend it doesn’t exist. Put the pressure on yourself to get the house clean periodically by inviting friends over. As much as we might deny it, we all like our home to be clean for guests. I even joke with my girlfriends that I’m inviting them over for selfish reasons to motivate me to clean. My motto “whatever works!”

7 Clean as you go. You knew this one was coming. Cooking up a storm one weekend day? Clean up those dishes THAT day! Doing some big art projects at your house? Put away the supplies after you’re finished. Walking in the front door? Hang up your coat in the closet instead of laying it on the couch. Now you don’t have to do huge weekend cleaning sessions for little things that could have been done ALMOST seemlessly during the week. Save your big cleaning sessions for real deep cleaning (like cleaning out your fridge or mopping the floors)

8 Have a ‘junk drawer’. No matter how much we try to put every item in it’s correct place all the time, there’s those days where you just want to shove all your ‘stuff’ away quickly and deal with it later. Whether it’s a junk drawer or decorative baskets, it’s OK to have a place to store stuff that you just don’t want to deal with today! Plus it makes cleaning up for house guests much easier!

9 Set aside time each day. There’s no magic formula that cleans your house without you putting in some work in to it (well, unless you’re hiring someone to clean it for you). So many of us wait until we have huge chunks of time to clean. Yet, you can make some serious cleaning progress even if you have 5 minutes. While I was waiting for Joe to finish his breakfast before we took Reagan to the dog park, I spent a couple minutes tidying up our front closet.

10 Exercise. OK so this last tip doesn’t actually make your house clean, BUT I find that cleaning is the ultimate workout, especially if you put hand and leg weights on while you clean. While its definitely not fashionable, it does give you a great workout! A clean house + enough calories burned to skip the gym? Sounds good to me.

I love the look of our house POST spring cleaning, but dread the process. Don’t we all? So instead of gearing up for one big cleaning weekend each year, I do a little cleaning more regularly. Here’s the top 5 areas that I keep clean throughout the year that make the biggest difference.

1 Cleaning the Fridge | I HATE HATE HATE cleaning our fridge. The best way around it? Have someone (or something) do it for you. I LOVE Fridge Coasters, not only because of the fun print (there’s lots of neat options on their site), but because it’s the ultimate solution for spills, drips and build up in your fridge!

Fridge Coasters are super absorbent liners that fit in any fridge, no matter the type or manufacturer. Put these in high traffic areas like under the produce in the crisper or under the salad dressings in the doors. These absorb moisture drips and spills that mysteriously and inevitably occur in the fridge!

The special material pulls out moisture from spills, allowing the spill to completely dry. This means no more scrubbing, spraying or even scratching spills off your fridge!

2 Toaster Tray | I’m not sure if this is the official name?? Hmmmm. I’m also not sure why it’s so dang hard to find one of these, but there’s definitely a gap in the market! Even though my toaster technically has a built-in tray on the bottom of it, crumbs still find themselves all over the counter and in the cabinets. My solution? After measuring the diameter of my toaster, I found this small tray that fit perfectly underneath. The toaster NEVER goes anywhere without it’s tray. And the crumbs don’t either!

3 Dirty Towels | I’m still at a loss as to WHY Joe & I go through SO many towels and rags in our kitchen (I’d like to think it’s because of how amazingly clean our kitchen is 🙂 ), but at any given time we’re swimming in dirty rags. Until now I had two options: keep them in the kitchen or put them on top of our washer. Neither was attractive and both options were used way too much. Then one rainy Seattle Saturday (which is really EVERY Saturday in the winter) I had too much time on my hands looking for another DIY project to tackle. These cute canvas bags are hung on the back of our pantry door. Dirty rags are officially out of site!

4 Keep the Dishwasher Clean | EVERYTHING goes in our dishwasher. EVERYTHING. I’ve learned the hard way why some items clearly state that they are NOT dishwasher safe. Whether it’s my love of dishwashers or hatred of doing the dishes, I’ll let you decide. If you’re using your dishwasher as much as I am, you may start seeing a film on your plates and dishes if you don’t clean it regularly.

A quick and easy solution just needs bleach and vinegar. In your empty dishwasher, place a bowl with beach on the bottom shelf. Run the dishwasher on a hot cycle skipping the dry cycle. Repeat the process replacing the bleach with a cup of vinegar.

5 Coffee Maker | Got 5 minutes? That’s literally ALL you’ll need to ensure your coffee maker is sparkling clean. As someone who can likely out drink anyone in daily consumption of coffee, I was embarrassed that I couldn’t remember the last time I cleaned my coffee maker. Vinegar is always a popular way to clean, but having spoiled too many cups of coffee with that lingering spell and taste, I’ve got my own recipe that I’m happy to say works just as well!

Laundry always seems to be the most dreaded chore in most households. It used to be with us. I went through system after system trying to ‘prefect’ how to do laundry quickly & efficiently. Finally I’ve learned the perfect laundry system ….. have someone else do it for you. Not sure about you, but that likely won’t be happening in our household any time soon. Instead, here’s the tricks I’ve learned along the way!

Are you drowning in laundry? Make these simple & easy changes to your process for an easier and more manageable laundry duty!

Prep

CLEAN WASHING MACHINE: Probably not on the top of everyone’s list, but you should really make sure your washing machine is actually CLEAN. Yes, dirt and grime can build up even in your washing machine. Every 3 months or so I clean ours out simply by throwing in a load of old towels with 1/4 cup baking soda in a hot cycle and add 3/4 cup vinegar down the dispenser. Cleaner washing machine = cleaner clothes!

SORT BY COLOR: Keeping laundry sorted throughout the week makes it much MUCH easier on laundry day. We keep two bins in our laundry room “colors” & “whites”. On laundry day all I have to do is see if the bins are full to determine if we need to do a load. (Each bin holds roughly one load of laundry.) No more taking up the entire hallway floor to sort out all our laundry before washing!

PRE-TREAT STAINS: As I’m putting my dirty laundry in the correct bin, I’ll also pre-treat any stubborn stains right then and there. Always loving when a product can do double duty, Wisk Deep Clean® detergent can also be used to pre-treat tough stains. I seem to ALWAYS forget to pre-treat when I’m about to do laundry. This method insures my tough stains are getting extra attention.

EMPTY POCKETS: When I put each piece of dirty laundry in the washer, I make sure that all pockets are empty. Don’t assume that it’s only for jeans. Hoodies, jackets, anything with a pocket COULD have something inside! I keep a small jar on top of my washer for “pocket surprises”. Having a jar in plain sight as I’m loading the washer helps me remember to check the pockets. Otherwise I’d likely forget! Nothings more annoying than taking a load out of the washer to find out a tissue was left in one of the pockets!

Are you drowning in laundry? Make these simple & easy changes to your process for an easier and more manageable laundry duty! TOUGH STAINS: Since moving out to the west coast, Joe & I have been picking up cycling. When I say “Joe & I” I really mean Joe. I’m more of the causal ride type of girl 🙂 . While the sport is great, it definitely causes some DIRTY workout clothes. I used to only be concerned with the stains that I could see. Yet, after getting a whiff of our dirty cycling clothes in the hamper one day my mentality changed forever. The formula of Wisk Deep Clean® actually contains a blend of Micro-Cleaners that attack hidden body oils & sweat that can get trapped in the fibers of your clothes. What does that mean for us? Wisk can get ALL the dirt out in one wash! I stocked up on a couple of these over at Fred Meyer!

Dry

DON’T LET STAINS DRY: If you’ve got a piece of laundry with a pesky stain, make sure to double check it when you take it out of the washer before drying. If the stain is still there, pre-treat with Wisk Deep Clean® and wash again before it dries to prevent the stain from becoming permanent.

PREVENT OVER-DRYING: Somebody in our house might have accidentally shrunk a couple of Joe’s work shirts. I’m sure whoever did that feels absolutely awful and was only trying to help get the laundry done. Yep, Joe’s never letting me live this one down. Over-drying your clothes can definitely make some fabrics shrink. To prevent it, check on your clothes as soon as the dryer cycle ends and hang them up once they feel “mostly dry”.

May your laundry be completed as quick and efficient as possible!

Easy to make DIY storage for your dirty towels & rags in the kitchen! Step by step tutorial for a pretty solution for those dirty towels!

Since getting our new puppy in December, it seems like we’re going through a lot more dirty towels & washcloths to clean up all spills that a crazy little puppy will cause! Living in a 3 story townhouse, I was definitely getting my exercise walking up all the flights of stairs to put just one dirty towel in the laundry basket. That’s when the piles started building up in the kitchen.

Disgusting dirty towel piles.

My quick solution was to put these in a reusable grocery bag to just get them out of sight. And THEN that’s when the light bulb went off…. I was going to make labeled “Clean” & “Dirty” bags for all our kitchen towels & rags.

I purchased a couple black medium size canvas tote bags. I chose for black bags to prevent the appearance of getting dirty, which really just means that I won’t have to wash them as much 🙂 . With a black tote bag, I opted for light colored fabric paint. My creative juices weren’t exactly flowing so I just grabbed a white & silver, but the color combos are endless. Literally!

The nice thing about these fabric paints is that you CAN put them in the laundry. So far I’ve only tested in on the delicate cycle, but they claim they’ll work fine on a regular wash cycle.

When possible I try to select the items on Amazon that are eligible for ‘Amazon Prime’ which means the item has two day shipping for FREE (the Amazon Prime items tend to be cheaper as well). If you’re not an Amazon member and want to try out prime, you can try out a 30 day trial here.

Once you’ve got your supplies your FIRST step should be to wash your canvas bags in the washer, skipping the fabric softener. Next iron them so that you’re starting with a nice even flat slate.

I truly wish I was one of those people who could create beautiful cursive writing naturally. It’s incredibly awkward watching me try to write anything on crafting material (so you definitely aren’t getting an ‘in action’ shots). A couple things I do to make it look better:

  • I used two pieces of paper to form the top and bottom line of my writing so that all letters are the same size and don’t start drifting outside the ‘lines’.
  • I type out my letters in a word document first. I then adjust the sizing according to the project I’m doing and print. When I’m ready to do my lettering, I have a really great example sitting right in front of me to follow.
  • I use Font Bundles fonts for a lot of the labeling throughout my house, but have found that I can also use these fun font styles in the word doc that I print out to mimic (I’ve never been in love with the standard Microsoft fonts).

I did a couple coats of fabric paint on each of my bags to write out clean and dirty, letting them dry for at least 1 hour in between. I strongly recommend doing this project somewhere away from anything or anyone that could nock it over. There were a couple accidents in my house 🙂 . If you were to look on the other side of the ‘dirty’ bag, you’d see what happens when a 4 month old doberman successfully grabs it from the kitchen counter.  Rookie hack? Just turn it over and write on the OTHER side.

I’ve been in search of matching containers for our various laundry detergents for years now. Yes, you read that right. It’s been on my mind for years. I like the idea of our laundry room looking as clean and clutter free as possible, but couldn’t find containers that would work. (untapped market???) Throwing everything in a basket and calling it a day wasn’t satisfying my obsessive desire for a cohesive look.

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

When grocery shopping last week I realized that these fabric softener containers were exactly what I was looking for. They fit nicely in my wooden basket & once I removed the labels, the clean white color would create the clean aesthetic I wanted. As I was checking out, the cashier asked me if there was a big sale on fabric softener. I had to hold back every urge to not explain this brilliant idea. Realizing that I could appear to be completely nuts, I told her I was just stocking up.

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

I dumped all the fabric softener in to a large empty detergent container (to use at a later time) and rinsed each of them out. To remove the label, I just needed gently rip with a knife. I also grabbed an extra spray bottle that I had on hand to use as my new spot cleaner container.

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

Next I needed to make my labels. This was the fun part! Instead of just selecting one of the standard fonts in Microsoft word, I searched through over 70 creative and fun fonts provided by Font Bundles through their Auction & Script packages.

I’ve never installed fonts onto my computer before, installing Font Bundles was SO easy. Actually I wouldn’t even call it installation …. more like click install and go to whichever Microsoft application you’re using to select from the font drop down.

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

Fast forward 40 minutes later I’ve finally narrowed down to my six favorite fonts below 🙂 . The fonts are all really unique so it was hard  to pick just one.

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

I opted for Greatpark, the top middle one. Using a sheet of my Avery 5160 template labels, I typed out wording for each of the cleaners I would be labeling. I centered each and increased the font size to the largest size that would fit, roughly size 50 (Fabric Softener was 32).

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

All I had to do was print and attach the labels to the containers. Then fill each container with the appropriate cleaner.

Way way WAY more organized, if I say so myself 🙂 .

Easy and affordable way to organize your laundry room with labels for each of your cleaners. Add a little personality with some fun fonts!

I loved this project because after years of searching for a better container, I simply used what was right in front of me (I also totally hated that I didn’t think of this sooner). Using a more creative font made these pop a lot more in the laundry room.

I had so much fun looking through these fonts that I ended up redoing my enter website with the new fonts = a weekend of me on the couch watching Netflix with my computer! This was on the to-do list for a while now, but from what I had researched buying fonts is annoyingly confusing (licensing rules, yearly renewals, super high costs, etc). So I really appreciated Font Bundles unique concept of making this really straightforward, easy and affordable 🙂 .

Below are a couple snippets of my redesigned site with Font Bundles fonts (I used Haus & Seilla Script):

Facebook & Twitter definitely weren’t left out either. I updated profile pics on both to match the fonts.

Font Bundles has a really good deal going on right now for both of their font packages …. Auction & Script. Personally I liked having these packages to choose my fonts form as opposed to buying individual fonts. It’s a way better deal, plus I was able to compare & contrast various fonts easily (which I did for hours!!!).

Off to label the rest of my home …. looking at you sock drawer. Kidding. Kind of.

Getting a ring professionally cleaned is great, it can take time and money! Try out this DIY ring cleaner for a quicker, but equally beautiful solution!

Although I do take very good care of my engagement & wedding ring, I’ve yet to have them professionally cleaned. I kind of hate the idea of leaving it with someone else, although I’m sure it would be safe and come back to me sparkly clean. Fortunately I’ve got a DIY ring cleaner option that does well to compete (and saves so much time)!

Supplies:

  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. baking soda
  • 1 tbsp. dish soap
  • Aluminium foil
  • Old toothbrush
  • Small bowl
  • Scissors

Cut a piece of aluminium foil to cover bottom of bowl. Fill with warm water. Mix in salt, baking soda and dish soap.

Place rings in the bowl for 2-3 minutes.

Use a toothbrush to gently scrub extra dirty jewels. Rinse the ring in warm water. If you’re rinsing over the sink, secure the drain or be very careful not to drop it in! That’s it! It’s that simple. Watch your ring sparkle!

Now if you’re like me, you’ll likely need a manicure to go with that new sparkly clean ring 🙂 .

There's ONE item that keeps our entire house clutter free and has single handedly changed the way we pick up and organize our home!

There's ONE item that keeps our entire house clutter free and has single handedly changed the way we pick up and organize our home!
I try to keep our place free of unnecessary house clutter laying around, putting things back where they belong when I’m finished and keeping organized. Yet, when I look around, I always find one or two small things that need to go back to its place. Walking up 3 flights of stairs in our townhouse to put something little away, such as my nail polish, seemed silly and exhausting (although it definitely counted as a workout).

Enter: Decorative Baskets

I bought these 3 matching baskets, one for each floor of our townhouse, to store any clutter in that needs to be put away. Initially I debated whether to do this or not, as the baskets were actually additional clutter themselves. But within no time, these baskets were used on a daily, if not hourly basis. Anytime there was something to put away on a different floor, I just drop it in the basket. Then when I do need to go up or downstairs, I bring the basket with me and drop off all the clutter to it’s home.

There's ONE item that keeps our entire house clutter free and has single handedly changed the way we pick up and organize our home!

With the baskets all matching, it’s easy to swap these out as I bring one basket upstairs for a delivery and another downstairs.

Added benefit: it’s the best for a quick clean before guests come, literally throwing everything away in the baskets!

Another idea is to give a basket to each member of the family to put their items in, but since it’s just Joe & me (and really most of the clutter is mine), one basket on each floor worked best for us.

Here’s some PERFECT stairs baskets that I’m loving

UPDATE: Although Joe & I don’t have separate baskets, I decided that Reagan, the newest member of our family, needed a DIY version just for her!

Now that I’m not walking up and down the stairs as much, I should probably get a gym membership! There's ONE item that keeps our entire house clutter free and has single handedly changed the way we pick up and organize our home!

How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization! After realizing that my fantasy of having Real Housewives Yolanda Foster’s fridge was never going to happen, I decided that mine needed a serious cleaning and reorganization. My current situation was a fridge with no extra room, lots of expired food, and all the wrong containers. We even had an empty 6 pack beer holder in the fridge while the individual cans were scattered throughout. So here’s my way to organize a refrigerator …. Yolanda style.

I’m pretty selective of what types of gadgets and organizing products I purchase. I often think that the products themselves cause disorganization! But here are my:

favorite fridge cleaning & organizing tools (that I use daily)

Now on to our huge fridge cleaning and organizing day!

Here’s what you’ll need for our project:

  • Paper towels
  • Towels
  • Rags/Sponge
  • Cleaning spray (here’s some great DIY options)
  • Garbage bags
  • Lots of extra counter space
  • Dish soap

Instructions

Take everything out of your fridge and start using up that free counter space I mentioned!

Now remove all shelves and drawers from the fridge (but before you do, take a picture  so you remember where all the shelves go).

How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization!

With the fridge completely empty, clean the fridge with a rag and cleaning spray. Make sure to start from the top and work your way down. For the areas that are extra dirty, let the cleaner sit for a couple minutes before scrubbing off with a sponge.

Clean all the shelves and drawers with warm soapy water in the sink. I’ve got a large double sink and a retractable hose, but if you don’t you could use your bathtub! Dry them with dish towels and set them aside.

Now review all the groceries that are sitting How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization!on your counters, throwing away expired items and consolidating duplicates. When doing this I discovered I owned two soy sauces both half used. I also found a missing face mask. This is also a good time to group like items together.

Add your shelving back in to the fridge, being thoughtful about the placement to maximize your space. I ended up removing one of the shelves to allow storage containers to fit better.
