I love the look of our house POST spring cleaning, but dread the process. Don’t we all? So instead of gearing up for one big cleaning weekend each year, I do a little cleaning more regularly. Here’s the top 5 areas that I keep clean throughout the year that make the biggest difference.

1 Cleaning the Fridge | I HATE HATE HATE cleaning our fridge. The best way around it? Have someone (or something) do it for you. I LOVE Fridge Coasters, not only because of the fun print (there’s lots of neat options on their site), but because it’s the ultimate solution for spills, drips and build up in your fridge!

Fridge Coasters are super absorbent liners that fit in any fridge, no matter the type or manufacturer. Put these in high traffic areas like under the produce in the crisper or under the salad dressings in the doors. These absorb moisture drips and spills that mysteriously and inevitably occur in the fridge!

The special material pulls out moisture from spills, allowing the spill to completely dry. This means no more scrubbing, spraying or even scratching spills off your fridge!

2 Toaster Tray | I’m not sure if this is the official name?? Hmmmm. I’m also not sure why it’s so dang hard to find one of these, but there’s definitely a gap in the market! Even though my toaster technically has a built-in tray on the bottom of it, crumbs still find themselves all over the counter and in the cabinets. My solution? After measuring the diameter of my toaster, I found this small tray that fit perfectly underneath. The toaster NEVER goes anywhere without it’s tray. And the crumbs don’t either!

3 Dirty Towels | I’m still at a loss as to WHY Joe & I go through SO many towels and rags in our kitchen (I’d like to think it’s because of how amazingly clean our kitchen is 🙂 ), but at any given time we’re swimming in dirty rags. Until now I had two options: keep them in the kitchen or put them on top of our washer. Neither was attractive and both options were used way too much. Then one rainy Seattle Saturday (which is really EVERY Saturday in the winter) I had too much time on my hands looking for another DIY project to tackle. These cute canvas bags are hung on the back of our pantry door. Dirty rags are officially out of site!

4 Keep the Dishwasher Clean | EVERYTHING goes in our dishwasher. EVERYTHING. I’ve learned the hard way why some items clearly state that they are NOT dishwasher safe. Whether it’s my love of dishwashers or hatred of doing the dishes, I’ll let you decide. If you’re using your dishwasher as much as I am, you may start seeing a film on your plates and dishes if you don’t clean it regularly.

A quick and easy solution just needs bleach and vinegar. In your empty dishwasher, place a bowl with beach on the bottom shelf. Run the dishwasher on a hot cycle skipping the dry cycle. Repeat the process replacing the bleach with a cup of vinegar.

5 Coffee Maker | Got 5 minutes? That’s literally ALL you’ll need to ensure your coffee maker is sparkling clean. As someone who can likely out drink anyone in daily consumption of coffee, I was embarrassed that I couldn’t remember the last time I cleaned my coffee maker. Vinegar is always a popular way to clean, but having spoiled too many cups of coffee with that lingering spell and taste, I’ve got my own recipe that I’m happy to say works just as well!

Hello fellow coffee drinking! Here's a fun trick to reusing coffee grinds that you may not have thought of before. Now grab another cup of coffee!Hello fellow coffee drinking! Here's a fun trick to reusing coffee grinds that you may not have thought of before. Now grab another cup of coffee! Those of you who follow my Instagram account probably realize how much I enjoy a good cup of coffee. Noticing that I’m drinking my weight in coffee each day and throwing away tons of grinds each day, I thought that there HAS to be another use for these coffee grinds (in addition to using them in gardening, which I’m going to try this spring!). One of my more domestic friends was shocked that I don’t keep baking soda in our fridge to prevent odors. From looking at my fridge, I highly doubted that the lack of baking soda was the real problem so I blew off the suggestion. Until now.

I’m a sucker for anything that can be reused and turned in to a project. This one may take under 5 minutes, but it still counts! Instead of putting baking soda in our fridge to keep the smells at bay, I opted for coffee.

Once you finish a pot of coffee, simply dump the wet grinds into a small container and let dry for a day or two. I typically put these by a sunny window to speed up the process. In Seattle during the winter, ‘sunny window’ means any window where ANY sun comes through, even for an hour!

Once dry I switched containers to find something that would fit nicely in the back of our fridge, a reused plastic olive jar. Take out the baking soda and replace it with this coffee container! I’m considering trying this in our freezer too, but not until it gets cleaned out!

Off to drink another cup (err….pot) of coffee!

Any other uses for coffee grinds?

How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization! After realizing that my fantasy of having Real Housewives Yolanda Foster’s fridge was never going to happen, I decided that mine needed a serious cleaning and reorganization. My current situation was a fridge with no extra room, lots of expired food, and all the wrong containers. We even had an empty 6 pack beer holder in the fridge while the individual cans were scattered throughout. So here’s my way to organize a refrigerator …. Yolanda style.

I’m pretty selective of what types of gadgets and organizing products I purchase. I often think that the products themselves cause disorganization! But here are my:

favorite fridge cleaning & organizing tools (that I use daily)

Now on to our huge fridge cleaning and organizing day!

Here’s what you’ll need for our project:

  • Paper towels
  • Towels
  • Rags/Sponge
  • Cleaning spray (here’s some great DIY options)
  • Garbage bags
  • Lots of extra counter space
  • Dish soap

Instructions

Take everything out of your fridge and start using up that free counter space I mentioned!

Now remove all shelves and drawers from the fridge (but before you do, take a picture  so you remember where all the shelves go).

With the fridge completely empty, clean the fridge with a rag and cleaning spray. Make sure to start from the top and work your way down. For the areas that are extra dirty, let the cleaner sit for a couple minutes before scrubbing off with a sponge.

Clean all the shelves and drawers with warm soapy water in the sink. I’ve got a large double sink and a retractable hose, but if you don’t you could use your bathtub! Dry them with dish towels and set them aside.

Now review all the groceries that are sitting How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization!on your counters, throwing away expired items and consolidating duplicates. When doing this I discovered I owned two soy sauces both half used. I also found a missing face mask. This is also a good time to group like items together.

Add your shelving back in to the fridge, being thoughtful about the placement to maximize your space. I ended up removing one of the shelves to allow storage containers to fit better.

I purchased a couple key accessories to help me stay organized.  First is the containers from our sandwich meat that I use for all our leftovers. They’re a great stack-able size and technically free storage. So needless to say, I always buy the same brand sandwich meat 🙂 .

In an attempt to keep my produce ‘alive’ as long as possible I’ve been an avid users of Bluapple. They absorb ethylene gas which apparently causes produce to over ripen. My motto is “anything helps.”

I love these clear plastic egg holders, not only because I pretend they resemble something in Yolanda’s fridge, but also because they’re stack-able and I’m always hurting for space in the fridge.

I know most vegetables aren’t supposed to be stored in the fridge, but my preference for clean counters trumps properly storing produce.  One thing I do try to prevent is the pieces of onions and garlic that get all over the fridge. To combat that, I allocate one clear bin to ‘veggies only.’

Finally, wash & dry your grocery items before putting back. Even if they’re not noticeably dirty or sticky, they likely have perspiration on them for sitting out on the counter.

And TADA! I hope your fridge is clean and organized enough to be a work of art (just like Yolanda)!
