How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! Great tips and ideas for easy & practical refrigerator organization! After realizing that my fantasy of having Real Housewives Yolanda Foster’s fridge was never going to happen, I decided that mine needed a serious cleaning and reorganization. My current situation was a fridge with no extra room, lots of expired food, and all the wrong containers. We even had an empty 6 pack beer holder in the fridge while the individual cans were scattered throughout. So here’s my way to organize a refrigerator …. Yolanda style.

I’m pretty selective of what types of gadgets and organizing products I purchase. I often think that the products themselves cause disorganization! But here are my:

favorite fridge cleaning & organizing tools (that I use daily)

Now on to our huge fridge cleaning and organizing day!

Here’s what you’ll need for our project:

  • Paper towels
  • Towels
  • Rags/Sponge
  • Cleaning spray (here’s some great DIY options)
  • Garbage bags
  • Lots of extra counter space
  • Dish soap

Instructions

Take everything out of your fridge and start using up that free counter space I mentioned!

Now remove all shelves and drawers from the fridge (but before you do, take a picture  so you remember where all the shelves go).

With the fridge completely empty, clean the fridge with a rag and cleaning spray. Make sure to start from the top and work your way down. For the areas that are extra dirty, let the cleaner sit for a couple minutes before scrubbing off with a sponge.

Clean all the shelves and drawers with warm soapy water in the sink. I’ve got a large double sink and a retractable hose, but if you don’t you could use your bathtub! Dry them with dish towels and set them aside.

Now review all the groceries that are sitting How to clean & organize a refrigerator ... and keep it that way! When doing this I discovered I owned two soy sauces both half used. I also found a missing face mask. This is also a good time to group like items together.

Add your shelving back in to the fridge, being thoughtful about the placement to maximize your space. I ended up removing one of the shelves to allow storage containers to fit better.

I purchased a couple key accessories to help me stay organized.  First is the containers from our sandwich meat that I use for all our leftovers. They’re a great stack-able size and technically free storage. So needless to say, I always buy the same brand sandwich meat 🙂 .

In an attempt to keep my produce ‘alive’ as long as possible I’ve been an avid users of Bluapple. They absorb ethylene gas which apparently causes produce to over ripen. My motto is “anything helps.”

I love these clear plastic egg holders, not only because I pretend they resemble something in Yolanda’s fridge, but also because they’re stack-able and I’m always hurting for space in the fridge.

I know most vegetables aren’t supposed to be stored in the fridge, but my preference for clean counters trumps properly storing produce.  One thing I do try to prevent is the pieces of onions and garlic that get all over the fridge. To combat that, I allocate one clear bin to ‘veggies only.’

Finally, wash & dry your grocery items before putting back. Even if they’re not noticeably dirty or sticky, they likely have perspiration on them for sitting out on the counter.

And TADA! I hope your fridge is clean and organized enough to be a work of art (just like Yolanda)!

Quick and easy homemade streak free window cleaner, just two ingredients! No more expensive name brands when you can make it yourself!

Quick and easy homemade streak free window cleaner, just two ingredients! No more expensive name brands when you can make it yourself!Because this Fast Fix Friday is SO fast, there’s two today!

Homemade Streak Free Window Cleaner AND an All-Purpose Cleaner

I like these not only because it’s so easy & cheap, but also I LOVE the idea of matching labeled spray bottles instead of different shaped ones regular cleaning sprays come in (more on that at the end of the post).

Streak Free Window Cleaner

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 tsp. blue Dawn dish soap (I’ve used other kinds, but Dawn seems to work the best!)

All Purpose Cleaning Spray

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp Borax natural detergent (find this at your local grocery store in the laundry aisle)

For both recipes combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to mix.

Now on to my favorite part: matching bottles & labels.

I found these spray bottles on Amazon and really liked them. They’re sturdier than the typical spray bottle. The tall and narrow design fits under my sink better than traditional bulkier odd shaped sizes. You could put any type of labels on these bottles, but I prefer these waterproof ones. Now I question whether these would last if I submerged in to water, but I can tell that they’re made of a stronger more ‘plastic-y’ material. I’ve used them daily (well… maybe 🙂 ) for over a year and the labels still look like new.

Now there’s no excuse not to clean the windows!

Clean your coffee maker with just 2 ingredients found in your kitchen! Takes only 5 minutes! Part of our 'Fast Fix Friday' weekly series.

Clean your coffee maker with just 2 ingredients found in your kitchen! Takes only 5 minutes! Part of our 'Fast Fix Friday' weekly series.
Apparently the amount of coffee I drink doesn’t correlate to the frequency that I clean my coffee maker. Even though I drink about a pot a day (I know, it’s gross), the last time I cleaned my coffee pot was over a year ago (yes, that’s even grosser). I remember that because when I cleaned it, I used vinegar. Super popular and there’s about a zillion Pinterest pins about it. Unfortunately for me, even though I rinsed and rinsed, the vinegar smell and taste lingered for days in my coffee maker. I thought I’d have to wait days until I drank another cup of coffee… and then I remembered I live in Seattle, the home of coffee, literally on every block.

But what I did learn that I won’t use vinegar again.

Fortunately there’s another solution, and as you guessed ….. it can be done in 5 minutes!

Clean your coffee maker with just 2 ingredients found in your kitchen! Takes only 5 minutes! Part of our 'Fast Fix Friday' weekly series.

All you need is:

  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup baking soda

Pour baking soda in to the coffee pot full of water. Mix with a spoon. With your coffee maker turned on, pour the baking soda water through the coffee maker and run the coffee maker as normal (minus a coffee filter). Once its finished running, pour the hot baking soda water back in the tank and run through the process two more times.

Clean your coffee maker with just 2 ingredients found in your kitchen! Takes only 5 minutes! Part of our 'Fast Fix Friday' weekly series. Then use a sponge or rag to clean out the inside of the coffee pot with the baking soda water still inside (the baking soda will help remove the coffee residue more easily).

Dump out the baking soda water, rinse and add fresh water to the coffee pot. Pour in the lemon juice and run through the coffee maker one last time.

and ….

TADA! Coffee maker cleaned! No vinegar smelling coffee maker, no running to Starbucks needed.

To celebrate, I made a cup (errr… pot) of coffee. Caffeinated Lindsay = happy.

Easy to make natural Garbage Disposal Tablets that you can freeze for quick use! The best part? You make with ingredients from your kitchen!I think of myself as a rather obsessed cleaning nut. I like neatness and order with everything in its place. My sock door is organized and my fridge is clean. But honestly, who ever cleans their garbage disposal? Not this girl….until our kitchen started smelling like sh*t and I had no idea why. It was spotless; not a crumb to be found. Sure enough, it was the drain. So I did what every 30 something working professional does.

I called Mom.

Well… here’s her secret sauce. Best part (besides that my kitchen no longer smells)? You can make it SO easily with items you already have in your kitchen. It’s basically free.  The double whammy? You can make it in bulk.

INGREDIENTS

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Citrus fruit peels (use ANY that you want – lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges, etc)
  • Ice cube tray

A note on the fruit peels: If you don’t want to waste a perfectly good fruit on this, wait until you actually eat the fruit and then throw the peels in a plastic bag and place in the freezer until you have at least 2 or 3 full fruit peels.

Chop up citrus fruit peels in to small pieces. Remember, this is going in your garbage disposal so perfect knife skills are NOT important. Thank goodness!

Stuff the fruit pieces in to each tray cube about 3/4 of the way full.

Then fill  with the distilled white vinegar.

Pop in the freezer overnight.

You can definitely use any standard ice cube trays, but  really like these because they’re rubber and bendable so it’s super duper easy to pop the cubes out of. (I also use these ice cube trays to freeze all sorts of other things like herbs, juices, etc.)

When possible I try to select the items on Amazon that are eligible for ‘Amazon Prime’ which means the item has two day shipping for FREE (the Amazon Prime items tend to be cheaper as well). If you’re not an Amazon member and want to try out prime, you can try out a 30 day trial here.

Then throw these in to a LABELED plastic sandwich bag (something like “DO NOT EAT – Garbage disposal tablets”). You can envision what I’m trying to prevent. Ugh. Getting shivers just writing this.

Now when you go to clean your garbage disposal (aka when your kitchen starts to smell and you can’t figure out why), simply turn on the hot water, pop a couple of these down the drain, and flip on the disposal.

DONE! Problem solved.

Thanks Mom 🙂
