Although I love decorating for the holidays, Valentines Day is typically the one I skip. Probably because I’m still recovering from putting away my Christmas decorations, but also I’ve had trouble finding subtle decorations that can somewhat blend in with my more minimal decor. I’m really in to this DIY hearts projects becase it adds a pop of Valentines Day without going overboard! Another bonus is that these can be used year after year so as you’re putting yoru Christmas decorations away, you can put these up in a snap!
Supplies
- Small wooden hearts (I used 1 & 2 inch diameter hearts I found at Joann’s)
- Paint brush
- Acrylic paint (I didn’t have any pink paint left o I mixed red & white!)
- Small clear hooks
- Real or fake branches (I used fake branches that were already in a vase on my family room end table)
Paint your hearts! I painted two coats on each side, waiting at least 1 hour in between coats to dry. (I’m incredibly inpatient so this was by far the worst part of the project.) Don’t forget about the sides too.
Then assemble your command hooks, which really just means putting the sticky part on the plastic part. I also cut off the long clear ‘tag’ that stuck out. (The purpose of those ‘tags’ is to help easily rip the hook off of whatever you put it on. But for this project, I don’t plan on ever taking the hooks off.) This is optional based on how big your hearts are. Mine were small enough that the clear ‘tag’ would stick out, which I did not want.
Stick your hooks on to each of the hearts. I just placed mine wherever they would fit (sideways, diagonal, etc.). Since I am hooking these on to a branch, it really didn’t matter.
Then just clip these on to your branches, making sure the clip was facing the back. Since the clips are clear it really didn’t matter what direction they were facing as no one could see them (except for me 🙂 ).
Now you’ve got an easy more sophisticated way to have a punch of Valentines Day …. just as I FINALLY put away the Christmas decorations!

I’m not huge on Valentine’s Day decorations either, but I love how your decorative hearts turned out. They’re really subtle and pretty, and they look perfect with the flowers on the branches. I saw those wooden hearts at JoAnn’s too, but decided I didn’t feel like taking the time to paint all those little hearts, haha. Next year, maybe!
