DIY Ironing Cord Holder

Lately I’ve been working to organize and decorate our laundry room (pictures to come soon!). It’s a pretty small space so I removed a lot of unnecessary clutter to make room to sort & fold our laundry. One thing that I noticed ALWAYS taking up room was the ironing cord. On too many occasions the cord would actually end up in the washer or dryer because the long cord was dangling everywhere. Enter: Ironing Cord Holder. When I showed Joe my final product he laughed and asked if I had officially run out of things to organize. Yet, I stand by the fact that this is a necessity in every laundry room 🙂 .

Supplies

  • Thick fabric (I used left over outdoor fabric that I made pillows with)
  • Velcro (if you use the kind with a sticky back, then you won’t need as much Iron on Fabric Tape)
  • Iron on Fabric Tape
  • Scissors
  • Iron

The first thing I did was measure the available space for my holder on my iron (as shown to the right). No more tangling ironing cords falling all over with this no sew DIY Ironing Cord Holder! Easy to make in only 15 minutes!Mine was roughly 3 1/2 inches. To come up with my fabric height, I doubled that space (to make it thicker) & added an additional 2 inches (for fabric tape). My dimensions are 3 1/2 x 2 = 7 + 2 = 9 inches in height. If you have a standard iron, a good fabric width is 9 1/2 inches.

Make sure your iron is plugged in as you’re going to need throughout this project. This is a NO SEW project!

Once you’ve got your fabric cut, the next step is to create a nice 1/2 inch fold  on the top and bottom (off the height), securing / ironing with fabric tape (see below). Note that I use really skinny fabric tape, which helps for projects like these. If you have wider fabric tape, 1 inch width for example, you can simply cut it narrower for projects like this.

Next, fold in the middle (of the height) and iron to create a crease (as shown below).

Now we’re going to do the same step that we did for the top and bottom of the fabric on to both of the sides (width), folding in 1/2 inch and securing by ironing fabric tape inside.

Next, we need to close this large piece of fabric so that it will fit around your iron. I placed fabric tape on both sides (as shown below), folded in the middle (the big crease that we created earlier). Then iron to secure.

We’ve created our fabric piece and all that’s left is to add the Velcro! Since I used Velcro that was NOT sticky on one side, I used fabric tape to secure. Obviously the smarter option would have been to buy the sticky back Velcro 🙂 .

I opted to use two strips of Velcro for each side to ensure a stronger hold. Measure your Velcro strips to fit, making them just slightly shorter than the height of your fabric holder. Iron on or stick your Velcro to the fabric. When attaching the Velcro to the fabric, make sure that one set of strips is placed on the front left and the other on the back right. (If you put both Velcro strips on the same side of the fabric it will not close when looping around your iron.)

Tada! You’re now officially ready to organize your ironing cord!

I love this idea! It’s perfect for keeping those cords in check! Now if I can only get the rest of my family to actually use them… 😉

This just made my life worth living again! Our laundry area is just our appliances sharing a closet with our pantry shelves. The only place to store the iron is in a basket on top of the dryer. And the cord never behaves.

I’m definitely making these for everything that has a cord!
