Those of you who follow my Instagram account probably realize how much I enjoy a good cup of coffee. Noticing that I’m drinking my weight in coffee each day and throwing away tons of grinds each day, I thought that there HAS to be another use for these coffee grinds (in addition to using them in gardening, which I’m going to try this spring!). One of my more domestic friends was shocked that I don’t keep baking soda in our fridge to prevent odors. From looking at my fridge, I highly doubted that the lack of baking soda was the real problem so I blew off the suggestion. Until now.
I’m a sucker for anything that can be reused and turned in to a project. This one may take under 5 minutes, but it still counts! Instead of putting baking soda in our fridge to keep the smells at bay, I opted for coffee.
Once you finish a pot of coffee, simply dump the wet grinds into a small container and let dry for a day or two. I typically put these by a sunny window to speed up the process. In Seattle during the winter, ‘sunny window’ means any window where ANY sun comes through, even for an hour!
Once dry I switched containers to find something that would fit nicely in the back of our fridge, a reused plastic olive jar. Take out the baking soda and replace it with this coffee container! I’m considering trying this in our freezer too, but not until it gets cleaned out!
Off to drink another cup (err….pot) of coffee!
Any other uses for coffee grinds?
I dump my grinds into my garden beds, but I love your idea! I also think the dried grounds would look neat as decorative filler in mason jars.
ohhhhh I LOVE that idea with the mason jars! I just always forget to save my mason jars 🙂
Oh, I’m going to give this a try. I always keep baking soda in the fridge, but I like the idea of reusing coffee grounds.
I used to do the same! I figured I should put all my used coffee grinds to use! (I drink WAY too much coffee!)
This makes so much sense! Great idea.
thanks so much for stopping by!
Hmm, I had no idea used coffee grounds would work this way. I like the idea of reusing them, less wasteful! 🙂
I was originally surprised that they worked so great! Which was awesome because I have SOOOO many used coffee grinds 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by!
If you have ever had a child thrw up in the car!! yuck, the smell is there forever. Tie fresh ground coffee (I know not the reuse grounds idea but reading these made me thing of this) in a nylon knee-hi stocking ( I buy these 3/$1 and just keeo on hand for things like this-place in your car-anywhere will work. In about 3 days no more horrible smell.
Ugh, that does not sound good! I LOVE your idea! That’s brilliant! Thanks so much for posting it!
