Stop digging endlessly through your purse! We'll show you the top tips and tricks to keep your purse organized while ensuring you've got all the essentials!

It’s a catch 22. I want to store EVERYTHING in my purse, but I want to have to carry NOTHING. After having 1 (well 10) too many things in my purse, I’ve finally ‘downsized’ and organized with a system that’s been working for years. My secret is that every item in my purse goes in to some sort of pouch, even my snacks! Gone are the days of searching aimlessly through my purse hoping to pull up the one item I’m looking for.

Here’s everything in my purse:

Toiletries

Like many of us rushing from work, appointments and social activities, I want to make sure I can go from morning to evening with everything in my purse.¬†My toiletry bag becomes essential. That includes a nail file, chapstick, a couple Band-Aids, pony tail holders, mini floss, lip gloss, stain remover, hand sanitizer, & a face wipe. While I don’t always use each item on a regular basis (although I’m probably pretty close to using my stain remover daily… oppps!), it’s reassuring to know that these items are there if I need them.

Snacks

While we’re talking about essentials, I ALWAYS carry a snack or two with me throughout the day. There’s no way I can make it through a busy day without a pick me up. I like to keep my snacks in a pouch as well. Once I’m finished it even doubles as a temporary place to put my wrappers meaning no crumbs at the bottom of my purse ūüôā .

These Weight Watchers Light String Cheese are a perfect size snack for me AND my pouch. I love the idea of having a healthy snack with me at all times (hello 2pm snack craving!!). At only 50 calories a stick, I grab a couple to snack on throughout the day. It’s a delicious way to get my calcium and satisfy that mid day craving. Grab yours at Meijer and take their¬†No Strings Attached Challenge! If you don’t love the taste, receive a full refund … going on now through 9/17.

Gift Cards

I have a perpetual fear of loosing all my gift cards. Just the thought of hundreds of dollars of “free money” to my favorite stores gone is enough motivation to keep these organized. On a day to day basis I do NOT store all my gift cards in my purse. Instead these go in a cubby in my entry way closet. I take these with me in this cute business card holder when I¬†do a big shopping/errands trip, not necessarily at the specific store that I have a gift card to, but a shopping trip in general. Sure enough I’m bound to go to one of the stores that I have a gift card to while out and about running errands.

Sunglasses & Iphone

I’m quite obsessed with my newest find, technically sunglass holders, but I also use one for my iphone & headphones. Not only is it perfect storage for these items, but the fabric doubles as a quick cleaning cloth.¬†Before my phone would get so dirty at the bottom of my purse (with all the crumbs from my snacks!). These drawstring pouches have mage a HUGE difference!

On the day of your wedding ask a bridesmaid to store your survival kit for safe keeping. If your dressing room is easy to get to that’s a great place to store as well. Another option that I’ve seen a lot of brides do is to store in the lady’s room. You’d be surprised how many spots in many hotel or banquet hall restrooms are perfect for storing supplies.

You know that feeling when you’re running out the door to catch your plane with arms full of WAY too much luggage only to find that you forgot a couple things?

Every time this happened to me I promised myself I would write down a list of what I needed for my next vacation. Not only was it frustrating to forget the things I needed, but also when I would over pack toiletries I didn’t really need. I’d forget the sunscreen for my beach trip to Miami, but sure enough I brought it with me to Minneapolis to visit my sister in December. It took me years struggling with how to pack my toiletries to get a system down that would last me more than ONE¬†vacation!

Pack WHAT you need, but not MORE than you need! With our ultimate system for packing toiletries, all your toiletries will be organized perfectly!

Here’s my favorite tips for packing toiletries:¬†

1 | I have a completely separate set of toiletries that I bring with me on vacation as opposed to what I use everyday at home. When NOT traveling I keep these in my suitcase.¬†This makes a world of difference and I can’t recommend enough.

2 | I’m a sucker for matching labeled¬†containers. Obviously. I bought a bunch of these TSA approved sized ones for all my liquids. Yes, I could just use those mini shampoo bottles that come at the hotels. While I’m a lover of everything reused, I’m a girl who likes my toiletries looking clean and well labeled.

3 | That brings me to the labeling. Don’t go for just any label. Make sure these are waterproof or you literally will only be able to use them for ONE vacation. Buying labels¬†that are pre written¬†will look WAY nicer than writing¬†yourself. The only downside is that there might not be a label available for every one of your toiletries (aka – dry shampoo anyone?).

4 | I purchased full size versions of my travel toiletries. That way when I refill my toiletries, I’m not mixing shampoos from whatever I’m using in my shower. I keep the full size versions in my suitcase when I’m not traveling. Literally EVERYTHING¬†that I need for my travel toiletries stays in my suite case¬†when I’m not traveling.

5 | Refill your toiletries AFTER each vacation. There never seems like there’s enough time to pack and prepare for a vacation. Filling up your toiletries shouldn’t be one of those!

6 | Anyone else ever feel completely gross after flying on a plane or a long road trip??? In addition to my¬†standard toiletries, I create a little ‘while traveling’ case that includes hand sanitizer, Airborne, Listerine strips, perfume samples (the ones from the magazines) and hand lotion.

7 | To carry all my¬†non liquids I love to use the free department store makeup bags that come with purchase. I never feel bad if they get dirty because I know another free gift is on it’s way eventually :).

Pack WHAT you need, but not MORE than you need! With our ultimate system for packing toiletries, all your toiletries will be organized perfectly!

Now on to show you MY travel toiletries! I split up my toiletries in to 4 different groups (which essentially means that I just have 4 different containers)

  1. Liquids | obviously these go in a plastic ziplock bag
  2. Non Liquids (hair brush, toothpaste, etc) | I use one of those free makeup bags with department store purchase
  3. Makeup | I always use a plastic makeup bag so that in the event that something breaks or spills, clean up is easier.
  4. While Traveling (a couple items to help freshen up during travel time) | in a small makeup bag

1 Liquids

I even use a small travel container for my moisturizer and eye cream (not pictured). For perfume, I refill one of those small free perfume sample containers.

Liquid refills

I keep all the refills to my liquid toiletries together in large makeup bag that I store inside my luggage when I’m not traveling. It makes refilling the toiletries SO much easier to have dedicated¬†products that I only use for travel.

I keep this stored in my suitcase along with the other travel toiletries when not traveling!

2 Non Liquids

I’m not necessarily a bar face soap kind of gal, but it makes traveling so much easier to do so. It’s one less thing that I have to try to squeeze in to my liquids plastic bag.

I keep a smaller clear case for cotton balls, hair ties & bobby pins.

3 Makeup

I have a completely separate set of makeup that I use for travel, as opposed to my everyday stuff.¬†If you’re worried about it expiring before you use it all up, you could alternate your travel makeup bag and everyday makeup every so often.

4 While Traveling

I keep a couple items with me in a tiny makeup bag to help me ‘freshen up’ while in route to my destination! Airborne, hand cream, Purell, Listerine strips, & perfume samples.¬†

The last time I lived in a college dorm was my sophomore year of college, over 13 years ago. Starting my junior year, I moved to¬†an off campus house with girlfriends and said goodbye to dorm life by¬†throwing away my shower sandals &¬†caddy in exchange for a bedroom without bunk-beds and a shower that wouldn’t cause foot fungus. Who would have thought over a decade later a¬†shower caddy would be one of my best morning routine time savers?

So before I indulge you in explaining my seemingly juvenile bathroom accessory, let me assure you that I don’t still use shower shoes ūüôā¬†.

The toiletry¬†caddy idea originated after my husband and I purchased our first condo 5 years ago in Chicago. This¬†was the first time that we lived in a two bathroom home. I typically wake up earlier during the weekdays and according to him I make A LOT of noise getting ready in our master bathroom. I offered to use the guest bedroom in the morning, but our guest bathroom was super small and didn’t have drawers for all my toiletries. I ended up making MORE noise each morning trekking my toiletries from our master bath to the guest bath. Poor Joe couldn’t get any sleep in the mornings.

So I started throwing all my toiletries in an extra shower¬†caddy …..

shower caddy

Here’s what you need to make your own shower caddy organizer:

Since you can’t create a¬†toiletry caddy without a caddy, that will be your first step. Mine is so old that I can’t find it online anywhere, but here, here and here are a couple good options.¬†My preference¬†is plainer the better as I find that too many compartments and gadgets sometimes make organizing HARDER!

Next pull out all your toiletries that you use on a daily basis. (I’m not talking about the super hold hairspray that you only use on a Saturday night.) Put all your day-to-day toiletries¬†in a row from most used to least used, left to right. (this isn’t 100% necessary, but it IS kind of entertaining). In the event that you don’t have room for everything, those items on the right won’t make it in the caddy. And I’ll admit it. Toothbrush wasn’t the furthest left for me ūüôĀ .

shower caddy

Remember all those make up bags you get with your free gift at department stores? Put them to use by storing your makeup inside!

shower caddy

Same thing for cotton balls & q-tips.

For any¬†of my toiletries¬†that are rather large¬†(mouthwash, I’m looking at you), I transferred¬†in to smaller Container Store clear container. For the mouthwash I went for a tall narrow container in order to¬†optimize the most room in my¬†caddy. The small white one? Baby powder ( = my version of dry shampoo). Take a look back up at the photo of all my toiletries to see how often I use it ūüôā .

Now all you need to do is make a little¬†room under your sink to store your shower caddy once you’re finished getting ready in the morning!

shower caddy

Note that I don’t put my straightener, curling iron or hair dryer in my caddy. I just don’t use these everyday and don’t have room.

The benefits of using the shower caddy:

  • I can easily transfer to any of our bathrooms to get ready in (I HATE sharing a bathroom in the morning)
  • All my toiletries¬†that I need are right in front of me (therefore no sifting through drawers)
  • It makes me reduce the number of random products that I use in the morning
  • Storage is easy underneath any bathroom sink cabinets
