Always on the hunt for something DIY-able and never one to turn down anything coffee related, I found these mugs at Goodwill for 50 cents each. They’re simple & cute, but had an engraved company logo on the side. For 50 cents I could risk an attempt at a DIY to cover that up!
And the incredibly easy spray painted coffee mugs DIY came to life!
First step is to wash and dry your cups. Always good to start with a “clean” slate! Then pull out the painters tape and start applying based on the design you like. I opted for each mug to intentionally have a different design because I knew I wouldn’t be able to replicate each one exactly. I highly recommend choosing a design that keeps the spray paint on the lower half of the mug if you’re intending to drink out of these. (I definitely will be.)
The taping part is the most important step, so make sure to take care when applying. Don’t forget about the handles (I almost did!) and cover the top of the mug as well. You could even cut your tape in to different designs if you’re really ambitious!
Next I went outside to start the spray painting. In addition to putting plastic garbage bags all over the ground where I was going to spray paint, I also put the mugs in a paper grocery bag to contain the spray paint even more. Highly recommend doing this as it worked great! I did two coats an hour apart and let dry overnight.
Remove the tape slowly to see your design!
Now you’re ready to cook! Seriously. This will help seal the spray paint on to the mug. Place the mugs on a baking sheet upside down (so that the spray paint doesn’t touch the pan). Place the baking sheet in a COOL oven. THEN turn on the heat to 300. Keep in the oven for 40 minutes. Then turn off the oven while the mugs are still inside. Wait 30 minutes before taking the mugs out. This will ensure that the temperature change isn’t too drastic which could cause cracking.
Your coffee cups are ready to go! These are great as a fun decoration or for everyday use. I can never have enough coffee cups! (hand washing only)

Simple treatment, but the mugs ended up so cool! Love it, and I don’t mind a little work, or a little hand washing to have a gorgeous cup for my coffee!
Really cool idea! Have a great week ahead!

These look so cool and up to date!! What a great way to transform something. At the risk of over repeating myself I am a big believer in the power of paint.

Lindsay I just love this idea! What a great way to change up a stock item and make it your own. I have to add too that I love the idea of spray painting inside of the paper bag! I use spray paint all of the time and would have never thought to do that… will definitely be using that tip in the future 🙂 Thanks for linking this up at the Bewitchin’ Projects Block Party last week. You are one of my feature picks over at Recreated Designs tomorrow. Hugs, Lisa
